Hybrid Paradox Security Solution for University Laboratories and Store Rooms in the Cape Winelands

A leading university in the Cape Winelands needed a reliable, scalable security solution to protect high-value research equipment, sensitive materials and critical infrastructure across its laboratories and storage facilities. With ongoing campus expansion and infrastructure upgrades, the goal was not only to secure new spaces, but to integrate them seamlessly into an existing Paradox system already operating across multiple buildings.

The Challenge

University laboratories and store rooms house expensive equipment, specialist tools and often irreplaceable research assets. These environments carry a higher risk profile and require dependable perimeter and internal protection.

The campus itself presented a practical challenge. Older brick buildings stand alongside newly constructed facilities, each with different structural conditions and access considerations. Installations needed careful coordination with facilities teams and had to be phased around academic schedules and ongoing construction work.

Key requirements included:

• Protection of multiple high-risk laboratory and storage areas
• Seamless integration with the university’s existing Paradox infrastructure
• Support for both wired and wireless detection devices
• Centralised monitoring with the ability to expand as new buildings come online

The Solution

Paradox was selected as the preferred platform thanks to its proven track record on campus and its flexibility in supporting hybrid installations.

The deployment centred on EVO192 control panels paired with RTX3 wireless receivers, enabling the integration of existing wired devices with newly installed wireless detectors.

This hybrid architecture delivered clear, practical advantages. In some older buildings, running new cabling would have been disruptive and costly. In newly renovated areas, layouts were still evolving. The ability to combine wired stability with wireless flexibility meant each installation could be tailored to the specific building and its risk profile.

The system configuration included:

• EVO192 control panels providing advanced logic control and strong expansion capability
• RTX3 wireless receivers delivering reliable coverage where cabling was limited
• A mix of wired and wireless intrusion detectors, door contacts and panic devices
• GSM communication modules integrated into the university’s in-house control room monitoring software

Integration and Monitoring

All alarm and system events are transmitted via GSM communicators into the university’s central monitoring platform, providing real-time visibility across secured buildings. The system automatically generates alerts for alarm activations, faults and tamper conditions.

By building on the existing Paradox footprint rather than replacing it, the university preserved its previous investment while strengthening overall system cohesion.

The Outcome

The result is a robust, scalable security platform designed to protect high-value university assets while supporting continued campus growth.

The combination of wired and wireless technologies allowed installation constraints to be addressed without compromising performance or reliability. Security personnel now benefit from improved situational awareness and a unified view across both legacy and newly installed systems.

As new laboratories, store rooms and academic facilities are developed, they can be integrated quickly and efficiently into the existing architecture.
